Each year the American Library Association (ALA) honors books, videos, and other outstanding materials for children and teens. Recognized worldwide for the high quality they represent, the ALA Youth Media Awards, including the prestigious Newbery, Caldecott, Printz, and Coretta Scott King Book Awards, guide parents, educators, librarians, and others in selecting the best materials for youth. This year’s awards were announced Jan. 27 at ALA’s Mid-Winter Conference in Philadelphia. Some of the notable winners are:

• John Newbery Medal for the most outstanding contribution to children’s literature: “New Kid” written and illustrated by Jerry Craft.

George Matthew is the youth services coordinator for the Adams County Library System.
