The Three Sisters

Maize, beans, and squash are called the Three Sisters because when grown together, they create a valuable synergy.

During this season of feasting, it is interesting to learn more about the foods eaten by the native peoples of Pennsylvania before the arrival of Europeans.

People have lived in the Pennsylvania area for nearly 20,000 years. Meadowcroft Rockshelter in Washington County, located in southwestern Pennsylvania, is one of the the oldest archaeological site in the state, dated at 19,000 years. Now a state park with a reconstructed Susquehannock village, it is well worth a trip. The second oldest is the Shawnee-Minisink site in Monroe County, located in northeastern Pennsylvania, dated to 17,000 years.
