He revealed His ways to Moses, His deeds to the people of Israel. ~Psalm 103:7 CSV
We desire a lot of things today. There is much need for improvement in our lives, our nation, the church in general. But, what is our desire? Do we desire to know His ways or are we willing to settle for His acts?
We hunger for a “move of God,” yet when we investigate what it is we are actually hungering for, it is almost exclusively to the spectacular acts of God. We want Him to heal, deliver, perform mighty acts that put His power on display. But, for what purpose? Isn’t it mostly for us to ooh and ahh and find some sense of braggadocio that only furthers to cement us more firmly in our traditions, agendas and selfish ambitions?
There is a supernatural need in our hearts and lives. We need to know Him. We need to know His ways. We need a “move of God” within. We need to surrender the control of our lives to the Lordship of Christ, which in turn will allow for a work of the Holy Spirit in our character. What we need, what the world needs to see in us is His character, the fruit of the Holy Spirit. And contrary to popular belief, this fruit is not signs, wonder and miracles. Though awesome in their display, and drawing attention to God in His mighty ability, they are absolutely incapable of fashioning us more into the character of Christ. Instead, the great need is for us to put on display the character of Christ to a world that is desperate to see and know the true nature of God. This character is evidenced in the true fruit of the Holy Spirit which is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness and self-control. This is the “move of God” needed in us.
Take a personal inventory of your heart, your attitudes and your general everyday way of living. Are these the fruit of the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit in you? Or, do you find that you desire to see the spectacular deeds of God, though awesome in their display, they are not the true need of our lives. Without this work of the Holy Spirit in our hearts, we cannot hope to see the “move of God” in our lives and in the church, and in our nation.
It is time to give up our desperation for the spectacular. We do not need another new revelation, a prophecy, a great meeting, and on goes the list. It is time to seek Him, to know His ways. If we will seek His ways, He will bring forth a supernatural, spiritual work in us that will overshadow any spectacular, natural work. In the reality of knowing Him, He will put on display what is truly spectacular, resulting in our growing up into Christ.
May this be the prayer of our heart: But speaking the truth in love, let us grow in every way into him who is the head—Christ. From him the whole body, fitted and knit together by every supporting ligament, promotes the growth of the body for building up itself in love by the proper working of each individual part. ~Ephesians 4:15-16
