Getting to Know... Ann Elizabeth Birely

From: Thurmont, Md.

Educated at: Catoctin High School, Howard Community College in Columbia, Md.

Family: Married. I also have a son, daughter-in-law, granddaughter, stepdaughter and step granddaughter and grandson.

Job: I worked for the State of Maryland for 30 years as Registered Nurse and am currently retired. The first 20 years, I practiced at Springfield Hospital Center, a state psychiatric hospital. The last 10 years I worked for the Office of Health Care Quality (the licensing and certification agency for health providers) in Long Term Care. I started volunteering at the Adams County SPCA in November 2009. I became a member of the board of directors and served as secretary from 2012-2015. I am currently serving as president.

Job's reward: Knowing that there are times that you do truly make a positive difference in people's lives.

Very first job was: At Hunting Creek Fisheries in Thurmont, Md.

Favorite food: Lemon Olive Chicken

Pets: A dog and five cats all from the Adams County SPCA. I also have two horses and seven chickens.

Hero: My paternal grandmother, Elinor Birely

Hobbies: Volunteering at the Adams County SPCA, flower gardening

Pet peeves: People who complain but do nothing to change their situation

Collects: I have an obsession for food and storage containers.

Best friend: All of them

Would like to have witnessed what event in history: The actual launch of America's first manned space flight Mercury in 1961.

Event that changed your life: Passing nursing boards

Your scariest moment: Taking Nursing Boards

Your first memory: My father raising a baby robin

Trait inherited from parents: Saving for the future

Piece of advice that you live by: Don't spend time worrying about things you have no control of.

Favorite reading/author: Theodor Seuss Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss). All the advice and wisdom I have ever needed to navigate through life are in his works (and I like the pictures).
