Chilstrom

Herbert W. Chilstrom, who served as the first presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) from 1988 to 1995, died Jan. 19 in Green Valley, Ariz., at the age of 88.

Chilstrom received his post-secondary education at Augsburg University, Augustana Seminary, the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, Princeton Seminary and New York University. He was awarded honorary doctorates by 15 colleges, universities and seminaries.
