Preparations are under way for the seventh annual edition of Gettysburg Green Gathering. The environmentally-themed event will take place June 1 at the Gettysburg Rec Park.

In addition to numerous demonstrations and presentations, Gettysburg Green Gathering will award its second round of scholarships to area students pursuing environmental studies.

“We’re going to be giving away two scholarships this year,” said Steven Zimmerman, event organizer.

The scholarships have been the organization’s goal since its inception. During the first three years the group amassed sufficient funds to begin making awards, Zimmerman said. The first award was presented last year, a $750 prize to a Fairfield Area High School graduate. Victoria Wessinger said she planned to study conservation biology at a Colorado college.

GGG originally planned to give one $1,000 scholarship this year, but an anonymous donor recently matched the award, allowing the second presentation, said Zimmerman. The recipients will be announced at the June 1 event.

“The environment has got to be a top priority,” Zimmerman said, describing the event as “a family fun day dedicated to protecting our home.”

The kid- and dog-friendly event will feature wildlife expert Jack Hubley and “Critters beyond your back door,” an assortment of wildlife neighbors, many of which can be seen at various times in the backyards of Adams County residents.

The day will be punctuated with entertainment by local musicians Neil and Shannon and Grammy nominee Ray Owen, and magician River Barry.

The event also is a gathering place for residents to learn about the variety of organizations and vendors serving up environmentally-friendly ways to help the planet. Organizations such as Gettysburg Borough Recycling, Strawberry Hill Nature Preserve, Watershed Alliance of Adams County, The Gleaning Project and Gettysburg Rising are slated to attend. Vendors will include Maggie’s Farm, Zachary Keller bee products and Gettysburg Stove and Solar. Also included will be a serving of meals and deserts by Bakewell Farms, Uncle Moe’s and VanGo. The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Gettysburg Rec Park
