Tests become tougher, determination remains
Posted: August 13, 2015

Every spring Pennsylvania students in grades 3-8 take tests in language arts and math, and every fall the results of those exams are released to the public. In advance of the data being distributed this year, I wanted to explain the changes that took place prior to and since the last testing period so the public will have a clearer understanding of the performance of our schools.

Reporter's Notebook: Rear view
Updated: July 20, 2013 - 12:32 am

Figures don't lie; liars figure

"The Senate Budget Committee reports that in fiscal year 2011, between food stamps, housing support, child care, Medicaid and other benefits the average U.S. household below the poverty line received $168.00 a day in government support. The median household income in America is just over $50,000, which averages out to $137.13 a day. To put it another way, being on welfare now pays the equivalent of $30.00 an hour for a 40-hour week, while the average job pays $20.00 an hour." That was the story - and it is a story - that was spread widely through media outlets like Fox News, talk-radio hosts, and conservative newspaper columnists.

Minimum wage raise overdue
Posted: March 19, 2013

Who wrote, "It is but equity ... that they who feed, clothe and lodge the whole body of the people, should have such a share of the produce of their own labor as to be themselves tolerably well fed, clothed and lodged"? Karl Marx? No, Adam Smith, the father of modern economics, who wrote "The Wealth of Nations," the world's first treatise on what builds a nation's wealth.

Mt. Joy fire funding still burning issue for fire co's
Posted: September 22, 2011

No firefighter alive would, in good conscience, turn away from the training and instincts to put down an inferno that threatens life and limb. None would ignore a call to mobilize in support of such an effort. It's not in them to not render assistance to another person in peril.
