May is the month most farm stands and markets open across the mid-Atlantic. Let’s quickly review some of the trends driving farmland loss and their relationship to farmers’ markets.

The US lost 11 million acres of farmland to development over the last two decades. A series of studies by the American Farmland Trust shows agriculture is increasingly converted, fragmented or paved over, threatening the integrity of local and regional food systems.
