CLEARVILLE — A small bridge in front of Charles Ellis Smith’s former home in rural Monroe Township was named in his honor over the weekend, nearly 76 years after he was killed in action during World War II.

Smith was 21 years old when he died on March 31, 1945, in Mannheim, Germany. He was serving as a private in the Seventh Army, 7th Regiment, 3rd Division at the time.
