In April 2002, President George W. Bush announced, “Peace will be achieved by helping Afghanistan develop its own stable government. Peace will be achieved by helping Afghanistan train and develop its own national army.” Hours later, Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld made it clear at a Pentagon briefing that Bush did not envision using American forces as part of a peacekeeping force in Afghanistan.

Bush’s goal: “Our war on terror…will not end until every terrorist group of global reach has been found, stopped and defeated.” And so began a war that went on for 20 years.
