District 3 Singles


Matt Steinberg, the last Times Area tennis player remaining in the postseason this year, met his demise in the first round of the District 3 Singles Championships at Hershey Racquet Club on Friday.

Steinberg won the first of three sets with East Pennsboro’s Nate Stahlman but couldn’t find the magic to complete the deed. He lost 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. Find more results from districts on Page B2.

Shippensburg 4

The Mustangs put together a one-out rally in the seventh to come from behind to beat Shippensburg at home on Friday.

Down 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh, the Mustangs got cooking with a Zach Reed single to right. Garrett Wilson mashed an RBI double to tie the score and a walk, then a Josh Tippin’s second single of the game loaded the bases for Alex Klingler.

On an 0-2 pitch, Klingler put the ball in play and Wilson beat a throw home from the second-baseman to give the Mustangs the walk-off win.

Aaron Hughes whirled 6.1 innings of three-hit ball, allowing four runs, two earned, while tallying six strikeouts to one walk. Derek Huff got the win, striking out a pair in the seventh with a runner on third.
